Harsh Chemicals Are A Risk

Check out the label of your conventional antiperspirant/deodorant and you will likely find the following harsh chemicals:

Aluminum -  an ingredient in all antiperspirants, Aluminum is a heavy metal that clogs your pores and is toxic to your body. Unable to naturally purge this toxin, it makes its way into your blood stream. Aluminum is considered to be a risk factor to breast cancer, lymph node cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, people with MTHFR and a host of other health issues.

Parabens - commonly found in most commercial personal care products, they are used to prevent bacteria and fungi growth. These chemical preservatives are associated with disrupting hormones and the endocrine system along with a risk factor for breast cancer.

Phthalates - according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), phthalates have been shown to disrupt hormone receptors and cause reproductive issues.  They have also been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Many countries have banned phthalates.

Artificial Fragrance - More than 95 percent of the chemicals found in artificial/synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These harmful chemicals are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies.

Propylene Glycol - this chemical, considered a neurotoxin, is used to form the solid base of conventional deodorants and in large quantities can cause central nervous system, kidney and liver damage. It is also shown to irritate sensitive skin. The amount of propylene glycol used in the average stick of deodorant wouldn't be considered a large quantity, but consumers should know.

According to the AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, these dangerous chemicals are believed to be deposited in the lymph nodes under the arm, which are not able to get rid of them because the antiperspirant prevents you from sweating.

New to an all natural deodorant?

Transitioning Instructions: If you've been using conventional antiperspirant you might need to help your body detox prior to making the switch to an all natural deodorant. In addition to being a health risk, the chemicals used in conventional deodorants actually cause your body to forget how to manage bacteria causing odor. When you stop using it, your stink can become worse. To help your body through this process, I suggest an underarm detox spray or clay mask. Note: the development of a rash can be a sign of detoxing and it should go away on its own.

Detox Spray: combine 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar with one cup of distilled water. Spray underarms, let dry and apply deodorant. Repeat this process for a week.

Detox Clay Mask: combine 1 tbsp bentonite clay with 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and 2 tsp of distilled water. Using a non-metal spoon, stir until mixture is smooth. Apply evenly on underarms and let dry about 5 - 10 minutes. Shower or remove with a damp wash cloth. Repeat as needed until your body has regulated its underarm microbiome and your scent is pleasant.  If burning or redness occurs, wash the clay mask off immediately.
